Property:The anhydrous acid is a colorless hydroscopic fuming liquid. Very unstalbe. Undergoes pontaneous and explosive decomposition, hence it is marketed only in mixture with water containing 60-70% HClO4.  1.768 . mp -112 . bp1816. Caustic strong acid and strong oxidant. Deflagrates in contact with combustables such as charcoal, paper and wood chips. Reacts violently with Fe, Cu , Zn to form oxides, with P2O5 to form Cl2O7. Oxidizes P and S respectively into phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid. On heating decomposes explosively into chlorine oxide, water and oxygen. Corrosive to skin, mucous membranes.

Use:As an oxidizer in analytical chemistry. A 50% solution is used as a solvent of acrylonitrile polymer. Also useful in electroplating, artificial diamond industry and manufacture of elecrtric cell, pharmaceuticals, explosives etc.
